Pilates

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise designed to condition the body and the mind. It originated in the 1920s and was developed by Joseph Pilates. The Pilates Method is an exercise system focused on improving flexibility and strength for the total body without building bulk. Pilates uses specially designed equipment as well as mat work exercises on the floor to restore correct and strengthen musculoskeletal balance.

Pilates has benefits for almost everybody. Pregnant women, athletes, people who have not exercised for years and injured workers can all benefit from Pilates. The difference between Quaytherapy and most other Pilates studios is that our instructors are physiotherapists specifically trained in injury management and work very closely with our other practitioners to design specific and safe exercise programs. If you have an injury your Pilates instructor will design a program that will address the problem areas or injury while also maintaining condition for the rest of the body. We are especially suited to those clients with back problems or sporting injuries.

Doctors and physiotherapists have recognised Pilates because of its strong focus on developing core stability around the spine, the shoulder and pelvis. The current ongoing research into abdominal stabilisation for low back pain patients continues to substantiate the principles upon which the Pilates method is based.

Program and costs

After an initial private consultation and assessment with one of our qualified Pilates instructors, a program is developed especially for your needs. Cost of the initial consultation is $130.00. Subsequent classes are in groups of three to ensure very close supervision. A group of ten classes is $450.00. Private classes are also available on request. Bookings are made by calling our receptionist, Ros, on 92412870 in office hours. As our instructors are registered physiotherapists you should be able to claim a rebate through your private health fund. At Quaytherapy we have a HICAPS system so that in most cases you should be able to claim your rebate on the spot and then only pay the difference.
